In Our Time on Radio 4

In Our Time, is a BBC Radio 4 program on Thursday mornings from 9-9.45am.You can download podcasts of the program from their website, but it's worth catching if you happen to be eating breakfast or driving to work around this time.

I mention it, because I am consistently amazed that this kind of philosophical, theological, cultural and historical dialogue can take place on public radio. Each week the host brings in three or four scholars and experts on a particular topic which they discuss from their various perspectives. So far they have discussed the development of aesthetic taste in the nineteenth century, the influence of the Islamic scholar Avicenna upon western medicine, philosophy and theology, and the origins of modern chemistry to name just a few of the topics covered. Although I'm not always interested in every topic, I find they are always presented in an innovative and interesting way. A sense of hope sort of seeps into my soul when I consider academic research being diisseminated in an open and public way for general audiences. Absolutely brilliant.
