Student Ethos
As for the research ethos here, it's very kick back. The program is pretty introverted and independent. If you do come, get on the list for a desk in the Muriel Stott room in the library ASAP, as this will help staying connected a bit to students here. Otherwise, there are seminars some go to, but it's pretty much a lone deal. You meet with your professor, and then go and read some stuff, then write some stuff and in the end hope to produce a "contribution to knowledge" - whatever that means. It's not like everybody's all bickering about who published in the most top drawer journal. At the same time, Manchester’s Religions and Theology Department is the top ranked research programme in the country, so there are some very bright folks around. You're just not interacting enough for too many egos to clash which is nice. There are plenty of pubs and lunch spots to meet up and chat with folks. In particular the Krobar just across from the Library on Oxford road is great for a pint with your wifi.
